Desmond flashes before your eyes8/17/2023 ![]() Their meeting always happened… we’re just tricked into seeing it as an audience from the perspective of present day island Desmond so it seems like he’s changing his past- whereas we are just seeing the only thing that ever happened. He believes he’s travelled in time, so he consults his physicist friend. He’s just become in touch with his future self, for whom these things have already happened, so present life now feels like a deja vu. ![]() He’s wrestling with this sudden feeling of deja vu, even though this is, for his 1996 self, the first time these events in London are happening. He suddenly has all these new memories, or downloads about his future. This causes him to have a flash of his future on the island, pressing the button, blowing the failsafe. He’s on a ladder painting a room, he falls off the ladder and hits his head. We have to view the events of Flashes Before Your Eyes from 1996 Desmond’s perspective. But why would the revelation that he has indeed seen that soccer game before make him more confident he can change his fate? If anything it should have the effect of showing him that he’s definitely stuck on the same timeline where he goes to the island. He then gets up in a hurry and says “I can still change things!”. Then he goes to the pub, depressed, sees the soccer game on TV and realizes “I just had the wrong night!”. Desmond is convinced enough by Eloise that it’s his fate to go to the island, that he breaks up with Penny instead of proposing to her. Any theories?Īlso, another part of this episode confuses me. Is she a time lord? There seems to be a lot about her character that is not revealed in the text of the show. She tries to slow Desmond’s roll there too. Is this only her first go round since she shot Daniel Faraday on the island, and she has simply studied where and when she needs to be to maintain the sanctity of the time line? If so, how did she later know the guy with the red shoes would get crushed by the scaffolding? Is Eloise caught in a time loop herself until she gets things right (like Desmond trying to keep Charlie alive)? Is she using Faraday’s invention to send her consciousness back in time (Faraday’s rat was named Eloise)? Is the actual ring shop owner unconscious in the other room? Is Eloise omniscient? Was she granted powers by Jacob to carry out this work getting people where they need to be? Was she seduced by the smoke monster and is (wittingly or unwittingly) doing his bidding? She’s also very aware in Season 6 in the Bardo realm. She lays out exactly what he’s supposed to do, including the boat race around the world and crashing on the island. In 308 ‘Flashes Before Your Eyes,’ in the ring shop, Eloise tells Desmond he has to go to the island and push the button or else everyone will die, so to “give her back the sodding ring.” Commercial break.
